Expel the UNWANTED...The YOGIC Way

Vaman or Kunjal Kriya, as a part of Shatkarma is known to many. They probably know its benefits but still avoid practicing it. The reason being, it is commonly interpreted or explained as ‘Voluntary Vomiting’. And that’s the end of “it”. The facial expressions change and the mind get blocked. Even though one is far away from experiencing the practice, the negative emotions associated with ‘Vomiting’ takes over the mind. Probably, this is one of the reasons that many avoid this practice which can, in fact, prove to be a boon to mankind in today’s scenario. So for all of those, who find ‘Vaman’ yucky, think again and think of it in terms of “Expelling the Unwanted” or maybe removing the poison from your body. The best part about Vaman is that it takes about 5-7 minutes. Post Vaman, you might experience a state of complete bliss.

  1. Warm approximately two liters of water at the level of your body temperature (warmer is better)

  2. Mix salt (approximately one tea spoon per liter of water, the saltier the water, the more stimulative by nature)

  3. Go on drinking nonstop 6-7 glasses of this mixture and before you know you are done with ‘Vaman’ as you would have expelled all the water automatically at one go in a forceful wave. Vaman is a part of Yogic Kriya, a cleansing process which cleanses the food pipe or the esophagus from mouth to stomach and thereby helps deal with a lot of problems associated with this region, be it, accumulated phlegm in the throat, bad breath,  acidity, indigestion or any other kind of digestive ailments and keeps it clean of impurities. In fact, asthma patients feel better after performing this and can choose to do so even during an attack. This helps relax the bronchial tubes which tend to tighten during an attack. In case of food poisoning, Vaman plays the role of life saver by removing the bacteria which might have got stuck in the passage. Many traditional yoga texts recommend performing Vaman on an empty stomach on a regular basis. It would be a good idea to perform it fortnightly.
