Know your AUM Chanting

Many households in India commence their early mornings with the energizing and rejuvenating sound of ‘AUM’. One might presume it is so to embark on the new day on a melodious note. That is definitely true but there is much more to it than just the melody. A few chants of AUM daily, chanted with utter devotion can fill you up with the blissful euphoria. How to pronounce AUM? Aum is pronounced and written as Om, Aum or even as Omkar.

AUM Chanting manipulates Nervous System Each syllable of ‘AUM’ chanting carries unique vibrations and value. It can be manipulated to derive special benefits. Chanting long ‘O’ has a sympathetic note to it and creates a lot of energy whereas chanting long ‘M’ has a parasympathetic note to it which brings a calming effect in your mind and body. So much so, that a few rounds of ‘M’ chanting alone, you might enter a realm of tranquility, quietness and peacefulness. How to recite ‘AUM’ The chanting happens with the flow of exhalation. So, it is important to inhale deeply in an upright seated position. In transiting from inhalation to exhalation, create a soft and small gap between your lips (this should be an automatic process) and exhale with the ‘A’ sound. The lengthening of ‘A’ sound is happening by pushing the stomach in to create a length of smooth sound in a rhythm. In the process of this chanting, the moment you close your lips, the ‘A’ will automatically get transformed into the ‘M’  sound and the creation of sound from the ‘abdomen’ will automatically move  to the ‘nasal passage’. AUM chanting is therapeutic in nature The vibrations and the resonance of ‘AUM’ chanting have a soothing effect on your mind. It has been observed that ‘AUM’ chanting turns one’s attention inwards and your distractions from the external forces are drastically curtailed. This, in turn, brings emotional stability, improves sleep pattern, increases attention span, reduces the number of thoughts in the mind etc. These are the main sources of psycho somatic problems brought about by our lifestyle and can be easily handled by dedicated practice of ‘AUM’. ‘AUM’ is one word mantra and probably the most powerful one. It contains three and half mantras which are similar to three and half coil of ‘Kundalini Shakti’, awakening of which is one of the goals of Yoga philosophy. Do share your experience.
