Ujjayi – The Victorious Breath is called Victorious for a reason!!

One should ponder upon the multitude benefits of Ujjayi one receives, with deliberately constricted throat passage. And, then, contemplate upon the staggering rewards, the same practice will yield, if the said throat passage is left un-constricted and wide open. Ujjayi Pranayama is expounded as one of the important pranayama by Hatha Yoga Pradipika too. According to one of the studies, conducted in the Department of Physiology, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PSGIMS R), Coimbatore, India:

Ujjayi pranayama and shavasana produced a significant decrease in the heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SP) and diastolic blood pressure (DP) after 6 weeks of yoga training, with a p value of < 0.0001. A short-term pranayama practice for six weeks improved the para-sympathetic (vagal) functions which suppressed the sympathetic activity, thus denoting the para-sympathetic dominance on the cardiovascular system. This practice has the power to regulate one’s heart beat and systolic blood pressure. It is, therefore, highly recommended for treating High Blood Pressure, Insomnia, Thyroid, Asthma etc. Its ‘Instant Energy Boost’ nature helps athletes perform better during their games. In fact, Ujjayi is performed distinctly in many yogasanas because the abdominal engagement, during its practice, puts pressure on the abdominal cavity, which in turn, supports the spine during the practice.
