Yogic Tongue Lock

The attitude of dwelling in Supreme Consciousness The Yogi who remains with the tongue going upwards for even half a second is freed from toxins, disease, death, old age, etc…… Hath Yoga Pradipika Khechari Mudra, popularly known as ‘Tongue Lock’ is an integral part of Hatha Yoga Practice. As the name indicates, the tongue is locked by first stretching it upwards and then rolling it backwards towards the nasal cavity at the back of the throat. Traditional Khechari Mudra required a lot of preparation. The regime is introduced at a very early age and practitioners had to go as far as getting surgical procedures to split the tongue so that the different ends could extend into the nasal cavities and reach the Ajna Chakra (the space between the eyebrows). Keeping in mind the complexity of the traditional procedure, Raja Yoga describes a simpler version of Khechari Mudra, which can be easily practiced by anyone. You can check the detailed write up on my blog on Khechari Mudra.  Khechari Mudra is practiced mainly with Japa and different meditation. Further, it makes an integral part of Ujjayi Pranayama and can prove to be one of the most effective practices for controlling High BP. On a glandular level, it stimulates Endocrine Gland and the Salivary Gland, thereby, playing a significant role in balancing ‘Thyroid’ secretion. It also helps in assimilation and digestion of food, as it influences the faculty of taste because of being dominant in the tongue region. Once you are able to control the placing of the tongue deep into the back of the throat, you begin to master the flow of Ida and Pingala to awaken Sushumna Nadi, and thereby, Kundalini.
